Fired for Speaking Out Against Anti-Blackness and Ethnic Cleansing: Open Letter to Cornell Tech

I was fired last week from Cornell Tech by Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Associate Professor Tapan Parikh for calling out South Asian anti-Blackness with a GIF and speaking out against ethnic cleansing in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. My termination is part of a broader pattern in academia and industry of silencing Black scholars who speak out against injustice. It also sends a horrifying message to Tegaru and other marginalized people that the systematic state sanctioned and extrajudicial rape, murder and starvation they’re experiencing can’t even be spoken.
On March 23, 2021, my friend (and newly minted Assistant Professor at the University of Washington) Sucheta Ghoshal posted her Critical Technology Practice syllabus on Twitter. Many people responded with positive affirmations, including senior scholars Lilly Irani and Andre Brock, because the syllabus was centered on Black and indigenous scholars towards a framework for liberatory technologies and practice. However, a series of South Asian scholars began to question the absence of “global south scholars” which I knew with relational/contextual information was truly a gesture to “Why so Black?”.
Particularly, the suggestion for Sucheta to take a hint from Tapan Parikh’s Revolutionary Technology syllabus was upsetting because having worked with him since 2018, I knew that it featured almost zero Black scholars. In fact, the only Indian scholar assigned was Gandhi, well known for being anti-Dalit, anti-Black and slept naked with children as a “celibacy test”
In lieu of an essay length response a layered critique requires, I posted a GIF of Kamala Harris sipping tea sans text. The politics here might not be immediately legible, but Harris’ ascension to the second highest office in the United States is inextricably linked to the immense social privilege she inherited by being born to a Tamil Brahmin mother, extensive career as a prosecutor and her mandate to create a Bureau of Children’s Justice which might be the Clinton Crime Bill of our era in its ambitious expansion of juvenile detention and child protective services. Indian caste discrimination is imported into Silicon Valley. The few Dalit engineers who receive an H1B visa come to the United States only to find the caste system thriving here as well.
This sole interaction produced a series of egregious, racist direct messages from Tapan Parikh on Twitter. (I did not post anything publicly besides this GIF until after he harassed and fired me.) He attempted to threaten Sucheta through me stating “all these kinds of actions do is make it harder for ppl like sucheta to get tenure because they have to decide whether they want to sit at this lunch table or the other one” and unprompted drew in the Ethiopian state’s Oromo-phobic rhetoric, stating “anyway u and noname can go start your black liberation oromo front and make podcasts, remixes or whatever. I dont think I share a lot in common with that agenda, nor u for that matter.” Like the Minnesota activists who organized protests demanding justice for George Floyd and #OromoProtests speaking out against Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, as Oromo diaspora, it’s impossible for me to ignore the transnational connections between the murder of Black Americans by the State here and the murder of Oromo protesters by the State in Ethiopia.
I replied asking for him to leave me alone because this was so ignorant that I needed to disengage, but he proceeded to harass me with 17 additional messages for over 6 hours. Around 10pm I repeated my request for him to leave me alone and he stopped. The following morning I received a 2 sentence email stating I was fired and requesting my University ID be returned to campus.
On March 26th, Tap sent an “apology email” to Sucheta “My immediate issues with [Khadijah] were related to some of her incendiary social media comments abt the brewing ethnic conflict in Ethiopia.” I’ve been outspoken about the state sanctioned and extrajudicial murders in Tigray since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed declared a war against his own people in November. There’s substantial evidence suggesting the systematic rape and killings of Tegaru civilians meet the criteria for genocide (further independent investigation is required to legally substantiate the scale of violence by the Eritrean as well as Ethiopian military). I’m also working on a report investigating the role of Facebook in facilitating the war and it’s alarming that this urgently needed work would be levied against me as cause for termination.
This contributes to an already chilling atmosphere for Black tech scholars following the high profile termination of AI Ethics researcher Timnit Gebru, by Google. What’s most concerning is the message it sends to Tegaru and other marginalized ethnic groups in Ethiopia when someone can be silenced for even tweeting about the crimes against humanity they are facing.

- I demand immediate reinstatement as lecturer in the Cornell Tech Milstein Summer Humanities & Technology Program and privileges associated with being a year round Visiting Researcher at Cornell Tech. Additionally, I expect this reinstatement to accomodate for my safety so I will not be vulnerable to Tapan Parikh’s racist harassment.
- A public, written apology from Tapan Parikh and communication from the Dean Greg Morrisett about how Tapan will be held accountable for his egregious behavior.
- A statement from Dean Greg Morrisett detailing how academic freedom will be protected at the university given the dangerous precedent my dismissal sets.
- There have been no full time, Black faculty at Cornell Tech since its founding. This has always been unacceptable and I demand that a cohort of Tenure track Black faculty be hired in the HCI and/or Computer Science department.
